Sexual Orientation and Homophobia

We discussed a few terms when it comes to sexual orientation. Hetero- meaning maintaining a sexual desire towards people of opposite sex and Homo- maintaining sexual desire for people of the same sex. We discussed there being some classification issues as some people have had desires and experiences with members of both sex, otherwise labeled Bisexual.
An important thing I took away from this lecture on sexual orientation is that it is an extremely  on-going, controversial topic.
Homophobia, as discussed in class, is generally more prominent in males than it is females. I feel this is because it takes a lot for a man to give up their "masculinity" so they just create a silly barrier between them and the homosexual people. I know from personal experience that with my family it isn't so much about gender, but rather generation. My grandparents are extremely homophobic. I think this has to do with the way they were raised, as well as their religious backgrounds. It has come to the point where we don't even talk about it anymore while we visit them because they are set in there ways.
